President Obama is set to address the
nation and congress in the annual State of the Union Address on January 20 at 9
p.m. ET. Recently the president has
given some hints as to what will be discussed in the address. Topics that will
be discussed in the address include cyber security, education, foreign relationships
with Russia and North Korea, and terrorism.
Due to the recent hacks to film studio Sony Pictures, the biggest topic that has been previewed the most is Obama’s proposals and actions to prevent cyber attacks. These proposals and actions, according to the New York Times, are set to improve Internet access and cyber security, as well as setting prevention measures against identity theft and privacy issues.
The president’s reasoning behind these proposals are not only due to the Sony Pictures hack but also due to him being a parent, according to NPR.org.
"Michelle and I are like parents everywhere," Obama said. "We want to be sure our children are being smart and safe online. That's our responsibility as parents. But we need partners."
Software companies have been collecting data from students in schools that use their programs to market and sell more products to the students. Jim Steyer of Common Sense Media, said, “data in the classroom and in school should only be used for educational purposes, not to sell to other people. Not to reveal inappropriate data.”
One of the main actions/measures the president is proposing is that retailers and other places that collect consumer data notify consumers and customers is notified with in 30 days of a data breach. This is more likely due to the recent hacks to Target and Home Depot, when the companies’ credit card machines and information was hacked and stolen.
In regards to education, the president revealed last Thursday a plan, that will be detailed in the address, about giving students the first two years of community college for free, according to the LA Times.
The White House then released a more detailed plan proposal about giving students the first two years of community college free. According to the released plan, the federal government would pay 75 percent of the costs for community college with states picking up the remaining 25 percent.
This proposal plan is aimed at students who are willing to work hard to receive the help. Those who qualify could get there tuition paid for and use other awards and scholarships to help pay for other expenses such as books, recreational fees, etc. This would enable students to graduate easier and faster.
Russia has been infiltrating Ukraine and has taken up more nuclear weapons the past year, so further relations with the United States are highly likely to be discussed as well as relations with North Korea who are being blamed for the Sony Pictures hack due to the country not liking the satirical film, The Interview. Finally, the topic of terrorism is to be detailed and discussed as well due to the recent attacks in France. All will be detailed in next week’s address.
